Is your crack den or your sweet shop, the local supplement stores pre workout section, or are you hanging around outside the coffee house begging for a hit of  double espresso?


Okay, so maybe its not quite desperate times just yet, but it is amazing how quickly we can descend into a body's reliance on caffeine/stimulants, due to complete and rising over consumption of it.


Caffeine stimulates the sympathetic nervous system. Many people feel like they 'need' to reach for that morning fix of caffeine immediately upon waking, when actually the body is more primed through Adenosine not for caffeine, but for water and sodium for energy.


Now, i'm not here to lecture people on living their lives or their morning routine, so do whatever YOU want ;-)


So If a morning coffee (or morning energy drink for you crazy people) is part of your immediate morning ritual that you really enjoy, then by all means keep on indulging. But if you want to shoot for the stimulant to be utilised more optimally, try to leave it for at least an hour or more after waking for your first 'hit'.


Be aware of the very high caffeine content in things like pre workout, some have 300-400mg per dose AND added strong stimulants on top of that! 


Add in a few coffees and energy drinks per day and well cowboys, we' have ourselves a rodeo!


Regularly doing this and you start to approach dangerously high overconsumption and risk frying your adrenals, ruining sleep and some almighty crashes/withdrawal from long term high use.

 

Try and regulate your use, i LOVE coffee and will occasionally also have pre workout a couple times a week.


Finally and critically, did you know that half life of caffeine ranges between 4-9 hours? It sticks around way longer than you might think. 


Having trouble sleeping at night? or never hitting deep REM sleep or never feeling fully rested? If you’re having caffeine at 4, 5, 6 pm in the eve or later then this might be why.


So what do you then do after a shit nights sleep when you wake up???


Why reach for the caffeine of course!
